Periodontal scaling and root planning
Periodontal scaling procedures include the removal of plaque, calculus and stains from the crown and root surfaces of teeth. Root planing is a specialized skill involving scaling of the root of the tooth. Often times a scaling device may be electric, also known as an ultrasonic or sonic scaler.
Ultrasonic scalers vibrate at a frequency that breaks down bacterial cell. The ultrasonic scaler helps to remove both plaque and calculus. Hand instruments are used to complete the fine hand scaling that removes anything the ultrasonic scaler left behind.
Gum grafting (also known as Periodontal Plastic Surgery) is a gum surgery that involves grafts from neighboring gums or the roof of the mouth onto the affected areas. This surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The treated gums will usually heal within a month.
Additional shaping is sometimes necessary in order to make sure the gum looks as natural as possible. For this procedure it is recommended the patient plan to stay from 8-10 days due to the healing process.
Gingivoplasty (Periodontal Plastic Surgery)
Gingivoplasty is a gum surgery perfect for patients with gummy teeth or the appearance of small teeth. In this procedure we surgically reshape and re-contour the gum tissue for cosmetic, physiological, or functional purposes.
How is done?
During this gum surgery, we will apply novocaine to the affected area then we will trim the excess gum tissue to create a beautiful gum line. This procedure is completed with minimal to no pain and a rapid recovery time.
Perio Protect® it is a non-surgical treatment to fight the bacteria that causes periodontal disease. It is intended to manage oral biofilm with minimal invasive dentistry for lasting oral health.
How is done?
A customized dental tray is performed to help manage biofilm by placing prescribed solutions into periodontal pockets. The most commonly prescribed solution has oxidizing and oxygenating agents. Oxidizing agents chemically remove the protective coating of biofilm and its underlying layers and also cleanses oral wounds.
Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF)
Platelet rich fibrin belongs to the new biotechnology that has been a breakthrough in the stimulation and acceleration of bone and soft tissue healing. The idea of this process is to concentrate growth factors and proteins that enhance the physiological healing and reparative processes.
This procedure has developed to be used in medicine and several fields of dentistry such as cosmetic, periodontal, surgical and maxillofacial.

Examples of the usage of PRF Platelet Rich Fibrin in Prisma Dental are:
- Socket preservation
- Dental implants
- Sinus lift
- Guided bone and tissue regeneration
After a tooth extraction, there is a eventual bone loss, through socket preservation and Platelet Rich Fibrin, we are able to uphold the bone reduction. Platelet Rich Fibrin is placed inside the socket right after the extraction. The socket is closed with sutures and a membrane.
When dental implants are placed and sinus lifts are required to place dental implants, Platelet Rich Fibrin can be placed to accelerate the healing process.
Platelet Rich Fibrin is frequently used for guided bone and tissue regeneration here at Prisma Dental. This is a dental surgical procedure which objective is to grow new bone or soft tissue where it is needed by placing a barrier membrane. This is a surgery in the periodontal field used for prosthetic and esthetic reasons. Platelet Rich Fibrin helps the healing process when bone augmentation is needed for placing implants.
Platelet Rich Fibrin is autologous, meaning that the growth factors and proteins placed come from the same person who needs them. Which means the donor and the receiver are the same. As simple as a sample of blood is enough to obtain the Platelet Rich Fibrin to place at the surgical site. There are no high risks of infections or allergic reactions because it’s all from the same person.
Platelet Rich Fibrin is an optional procedure with many studies and great results. Platelet Rich Fibrin helps achieve successful and quicker healing after dental surgery. At Prisma Dental, we offer our patients the option of including Platelet Rich Fibrin to their procedure for outstanding results.
