As with toothpaste there is a wide variety of mouthwash out there, you can find them with fluoride and without, with alcohol and without, there will be those that claim to further whiten your teeth and those with a special formula that prevents the buildup of tartar on your teeth.
And you will also have an array of mouthwashes with different tastes and colors.
Which mouthwash should you choose?
Choose a mouthwash for your specific need
As with any product, choosing a mouthwash that best satisfies your needs is best. Which is your main concern? If your main concern is cavity prevention then choose a mouthwash that contains fluoride. If your main concern is gum disease and bad breath then choose one which will help you to maintain tartar and plaque at bay. If you have dry mouth or any other special oral requirement, then it would be a good idea to consult your dentist so that he can prescribe the mouthwash that best suits your situation.
Most commercial mouthwashes contain alcohol, and for most people this ingredient will not affect them in any way; however they are those who prefer to avoid it. Alcohol-free mouthwashes are available for those who prefer natural hygiene products. If you have small children that might swallow the mouthwash, this is also a good option. If you have dry mouth, alcohol might simply make it worse and it is best to avoid mouthwashes with alcohol.
Cosmetic versus therapeutic
Cosmetic mouthwashes are designed to freshen your breath temporarily, it does not possess any agents that either help with the prevention of plaque,
cavities or gingivitis.
Mouthwashes are not expensive, however if your budget is tight and you simply do not want to more for the same product, there are store-brand versions that contain the same ingredients that the brand-name options.
