Many times we go to the dentist we hear zirconium this, zirconium that, zirconium crowns.
What is the buzz about zirconium? What is zirconium?
Zirconia is a very hard ceramic used as a strong base material for full ceramic restorations.
In dentistry, it is used as zirconium oxide which has been stabilized with the addition of yttrium oxide, together it is called yttria-stabalized zirconia or YSZ.
Zirconia is the hardest known ceramic in industry and the strongest material used in dentistry. In the dental field it’s used as the core for crowns and bridges.
It’s so strong it can withstand the pressure of the bite without fracturing or cracking so it can be placed in both, anterior and posterior teeth.
This core is layered with aesthetic porcelain to create the final color and shape of the tooth.
By using crowns made with a core of zirconia, merged with the porcelain on the outside, zirconia crowns allow light to pass through as a normal tooth would and that gives more a natural look to the tooth, unlike other metal cores that block the light.
The normal too hot/cold sensations that can be felt with other crowns does not normally occur because of reduced thermal conductivity, this being another strong benefit for zirconia.
It is an excellent material for dentistry, uniting beauty and function. Zirconium crowns and bridges are the top choices for a natural, whiter smile, yet are still durable.
